A few days ago, I was talking to a friend of mine, who is currently residing in Portsmouth, Virginia (because that's her military base; she originally lives in Maine).

Well, the conversation that I had with her went to a rocky start, with her describing my state as one of the "most boring states she's been too," particularly because there's nothing to do and all she sees are antique shops (hmph...northerner).

Now, to the basis of discussion. Whenever I discuss some form of animation, whether it be American animation (Family Guy, South Park, Spongebob Squarepants) or Japanese Animation (Elfen Lied, Dragonball Z), she would bash them wholeheartedly and unapolegtically, citing them as retarded and simply "cartoons." She then tells me that at my age, I shouldn't be watching them and that I should grow up.

Do you think she's right, folks? I disagree because I think that there are many people in the world who are not only in my age range, but some older than me that still find satisfaction in watching cartoons on tv, whether it be because of the mature content, even when it is directed at children, or other quality aspects. I do not feel ashamed to be 19 years old and an admirer of cartoons. For crying out loud, does she even realize that the cartoons made today were created, drawn, colored, by adults? You could not expect a kid to put out such quality animation like Naruto or Boondocks; these creators had a PASSION for animation, and so they continue to use it in their current careers because they like it, and they hope that other share their passion too.

Anyway, this bashing comes from a person who's been working since she was 14, didn't necessarily have it as easy as me, and is now married (and she's only two weeks younger than me). I just wanted to get some feedback from you guys. Thanks.

Why don't you tell her to SHUT THE F*CK UP and that just because she has sand in her vagina about having to work at an early age doesn't mean she knows anything?

Or, less direct...just ignore her.

Yeah what ixz said. Well everyone(almost anyone) watches cartoons or anime. There are alot of girls my age that i know of who watch spongebob. So its just one's opinion, if you like them then she can accept it or get over it. If you watch them and she ask you what are you watching, you should proudly say you are watching (naruto, dbz, boondocks, etc.). If she argues with you just state why you like them in the first place. If she disproves then you tell her off in a argumentive but not mean way.

It never occurred to me to not be mean!

If you want a constructive suggestion, point out that animation is Art.

Art is the way Mankind expresses itself.

There are many levels of Art, but there is a strong overlap among the fine arts and the not so fine arts.

Frank Frazetta, widely acknowledged throughout the fine art world as a master, got his start in Comic Books.

There are many other examples.

But for anyone (even a Woman!) to decide what you should choose to define as Art for you is not constructive.

Ask her why she cares?

Is it harmful in any way?

I keep hearing "Adults" talking about "Getting in touch with their Inner Child"

I think that's Fluffing Pathetic.

I never lost touch with mine.

I pity those who do.

I am in my forties and look at my Animation! I still "Play with Stuffed Animals!!"

Unashamedly!

Maybe you should just feel sorry for her!

Peace.

Family guy? Cartoon?! Bah!!! What trash is this?
Next she will say the Princess Mononoke is just... well, she kind of already did. If she can't tell the diffrence bewteen a cartoon and anime, that's her bad. There is animation geared towards kids such as cartoons... then there is animation geared towards the older side. Just like live action! There is freaking Telatubies or whatever... and there is final destination 3 (which wasn't that good... so if you haven't seen it, don't get your hopes up.)

But anyway, In light of the conversation, enjoy these few clips from Family Guy, and while you watch them, think very ugly thoughts about this chick Bonanza has had trouble with.

Sheesh, I love you Ixz. :XD

But my opinion, even if it isn't much different...

Bonanza, I think that person was as I just read in Steph's sociology book last night... a secondary friend. One who doesn't understand you as well as a primary friend who respects your beliefs, interests, and dreams.

I get the same crap all the time... I mean, all of Anime Club gets it. "But they're just cartoons!" And some of these "cartoons" beat million-dollar budget movie storylines by leaps and bounds. It's just a different medium of story telling. I believe this is why a very decent portion of the crowd who enjoys anime is 20+ years old. We recently had a new member join our club... a really nice guy, looks about 26-28, and he comes to Anime Club after work... doesn't even go to college here, just lives in the town. I was really impressed by that. I mean, I'm seriously impressed whenever I see adults in places like Suncoast browsing anime for themselves.(You can tell it's not for kids when the adults are actually browsing for themselves instead of asking the employee for what the kid wants:p).

This also reminds me of the classic girlfriend trying to make boyfriend disinterested in video games because they're "kiddy" battle. If you respect someone as a friend, let them have their interests, and don't let yours go because of someone else.

Girls like this give all females a bad name. :shakefist
