It might be a bad thing for two reasons.

The quality if it is poor may give RPGM a bad or worse name to those who have never heard of it or are only vaguely familiar with it, thus potentially turning them away from future releases.

The lack of completely new versions (particularly console type versions) instead of rehashing the PC on DS (if that is what it ends up being) may turn off current RPGM gamers like myself. As it stands right now, as a BIG fan of RPGMs 1, 2, and 3, this looks to me like all the repackaged FF and MGS games. I would love to continue to support Agetec, but there is a time where you can't simply settle for the brand name. You must insist on continued quality as a consumer.

I hope I am wrong.

RPG Maker 2 had an incredibly steep learning curve, RPG Maker 3 was incredibly limited, and RPG Maker VX is basically RPG Maker XP with different graphics. If those couldn't kill the community, I doubt this will. ;)

I will admit, copying RMVX graphics for the DS is a head-scratching decision. Enterbrain probably doesn't have enough faith in the entry to spend money on new graphics. But if there's a way for us to share games on the community, even through some convulted third-party device (which we're used to, anyway), I think it will do well.

Granted, our community is rather small... but for every member of the community, I dare say there is a score or more of other people who do have RPG Makers and probably actively using it who either lurk around the community or don't know it even exsists in the first place. Hell, some projects even have their own site with all the trimmings like forums and such for just their one game.

So assuming that the only people who will buy a maker are people of the Mag and Pav needs to re-think a few things.

I would also add that no one should ever forget the impulse buy.

For the PC Makers, someone actually has to be looking for RPG Maker to find it. However, with a DS installment, millions of people could see it on a store shelf and say "hey, I wanna make an RPG!" and pick it up.

Reply: Well as long as a few of us are here, nothing is going to "kill" the community, but you don't think RPGM2 turned away many RPGM1 users and RPGM3 turned away many RPGM2 users? The continued lack of consistent progress from original game to sequel in my opinion makes the community need to rebuild every release and I don't see this new game doing much to impress the RPGM3 gamers, the previous console RPGM game released in the US.

At the very least, if they are going to scratch the benefits of RPGM2 (incredible power and customization), and the benefits of RPGM3 (excellent graphics and ease of use) and return toward a more RPGM1 or RPGMXP/VX style then so be it, but there needs to be improvement on the capabilities of those games originally to be a true sequel.

you're ignoring the fact that the portable RPG Makers are their own series, much like the console and PC makers. this is pretty much guaranteed to be an improvement over RPG Tsukuru Advance, which is the only game it should really be compared against, as it doesnt make any sense to compare a portable game to a console game.

That is an excellent point and I agree. I didn't even know (or maybe it is remember) that there were any portable RPGMs out there. But that lends to the idea that the console RPGMers need not feel the need to support it any more than they support the PC makers and vice versa.

In other words, are those console RPGMers going to get a DS just to play this new one when they could just as easily "support" Agetec by getting RPGM VX on their already existing PC?

Well, we've never had the chance to support the portable RPG Makers before, because none have ever come to the US before. this one might. game sharing problems are what kept agetec from even considering RPG Maker advance.

anyone buying RPG Maker VX wouldnt be supporting agetec, but rather enterbrain, by the way. and most console RPGM users, no, most gamers in general already have a DS.
