NEW 1ST POST FOR RELEVANT UPDATES:

Youtube Let's Play Channel: http://www.youtube.com/superorangegamer

Check out BOF3, part 7!

And, the contest! For BOF3! Guess how many times Rei says his catchphrase "Doesn't that just beat all?" (any variant with Doesn't and Beat all also counts from translation possible deviation), and post it on any Youtube video from BOF3 part 7 and up. Once the last BOF3 LP video is a posted, I will be checking your guesses and deciding TWO winners! Whoever is closest without going over, in the order of the first two that accomplish that requirement- I will be giving one prize to Youtube(or if a Mag member happens to guess it, they can also win of course!), and a MAG-ONLY second prize, of whoever from the Mag comes the closest in 2nd place. The second place prize will not be offered to Youtube-only users, at all. And accounts made after this date (5/11/12) are not eligible for the Mag-only prize.

1st Prize: (Youtube or Mag User)
A 3DS game, or an Xbox 360 game, or a Amazon Gift Card of Equal value to the game mentioned with the highest price, and an art commission from me(no sex or violence)

2nd Prize: (Mag members only!)
$25 Amazon Gift Card

Be sure to make a guess! Can't hurt.:D

Never played. It's been in my Top 10 list of games to get for a while.

It's relatively affordable, so definitely get this one! You can even get the more affordable PSP version(it didn't add too much I think), for a really good price. It's PAL, but PSPs are region free anyways.:)

Holy crap I LOVE this game. I'm actually playing Breath of Fire II at this moment. But III and IV are by far the best of the series. I can't pick which on is better though, they are both so damn good.

Actually, the last few times I was hanging out with Kajak, we were playing this. We made it fairly close to when Ryu became an adult.

I'm looking forward to this LP.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Me and my best friend back when this game out would play it together all the freaking time. That colosseum... it's gonna be fun.:P

Thinking about playing along on this one. Deciding whether to get the PS1 version or the PSP version. Think I might go with the PSP version. Typically I don't do well with handheld games (compared to games on a nice big TV screen), but it's an area of gaming I'd like to get back into, and playing along with a let's play would be a good excuse.

Speaking of screen sizes, I notice you're playing the PS1 version yet you've got the screen stretched. Is that intentional?

Yeah. I figured it'd be better than the block boxes on the sides. I'm editing it in Sony Vegas to match youtube's dimensions. PSP is definitely cheapest at the moment, and you can get the PSP 2000/3000 to TV cables on the cheap online usually too- to put it on a TV. Problem is, it's still a tad small but you can zoom on HD tvs. There's CFW and a program to use your computer screen as a display for the PSP through a USB cord... but, on the most stable CFW, that program isn't working well at all with my 3000.

Karr, I agree. My mom's ex-boyfriend(he lived with us for 8 years when I was a kid, a solid dude) introduced me to my first SNES RPGs (FFIV, FFVI, Earthbound, Lufia 2, Secret of Evermore, and Secret of Mana) and then a ton of PSone stuff. He swore by Breath of Fire, and so we ended up buying it. I'm almost considering sharing the LP of BoF 3 with him on Facebook, because he definitely had a profoundly awesome impact on my favorite hobbies. It was my favorite past-time to stay up on weekends and watch him work through these RPGs.:D

Personal preference, I guess. I don't like stretching the screens, myself, because... well, it's stretched. Plus in games with an overhead view, you wind up walking left-right twice as fast as up-down. Admittedly, having the black borders at the side of YouTube's videos did take some getting used to, but it was probably easier for me because I'm used to letterboxing movies on my standard TV.

That's interesting that there are devices to play PSP on TVs and monitors, but I imagine that I won't really be able to take advantage of them, especially if either of them involve opening up my system to do some rewiring.

True, true. I saw some other BoF LPs doing similarly. It may change, but I dunno. I might try the next one in black bar mode.

PSP CFW is as easy as running a program under games on the PSP.:) It has to be at a certain recent OFW(I think it is the last one Sony will ever put out), and I think PSP1000s are the only thing that don't work with it. Trust me- if I had to open up my PSP to do this, I never would have.:P My PSP 3000 uses this CFW. The cord you use to connect to PC is the standard charger cable for a PS3 controller or PSP. It's what you'd use anyways to connect a PSP to a computer to transfer and back up saves, etc. But like I said, the whole screen CFW app isn't quite working as intended. If you try to load or save, for example, it will crash the whole displaying it on the computer. Really, really sucks.

The cables for PSP 2000s and 3000s for TV are official, so no worries! They plug in near the headphones I believe, and connect the TV to the PSP. You can even go ahead with that and use a capture device if you use the standard 3-cord AV cable. I've tested that last year, and it works.:D But, it displays the PSP's native resolution, aka TINY. If your HD-TV has a zoom feature though, you can mainly get around that.

Oh, I figured that the PSP's resolution was really high, considering it was 16:9. Here I was worried that using that TV device would result in a game screen that's bigger than what my TV supports. But I just checked, and the screen's only 480 x 272. I think my TV's max is 640 x 480 (that's your typical standard resolution, right?), so I guess playing a PSP game on my screen would be kinda like playing a Super Game Boy game using the black border. Which would actually be kinda annoying. Having black bars on the side of the screen is one thing, but being completely surrounded by black is just bleh. Still, it means that if I ever decide to LP a PSP game, I'd have that option.

It is annoying! (A bit.) I have a Vizio TV that can stretch how the resolution looks, but even so it'd be a tiny recording. But, with a video editor, it can be made to be quite nice in zoom size. It's great for LPing PSP games(which you can at least do, as opposed to a 3DS or something).

Should be back to this LP in a couple days, the new mic is in Indianapolis at the moment. It's Prime, but Amazon takes for freaking ever when stuff is sent via Fedex. :(

Love this game so much.

Lantis and I were actually LPing this, but we haven't released anything cause it's such a long time in between recording.

Looking forward to this! :D

That stinks about the long times in-between recording.:(

And thank you! I'm kinda just out of the gate on this one, hoping to do okay.

Hey folks! Obviously, part 3 is up(the headset works okay, but still, it's a headset).

And, I've gotten a cold! Hurray. Scratchy throat, fever, and stuffed nose aside, the next episode should be up next week.

Speaking of which, I got a comment from somewhere else that "I'm sad you picked an RPG since people tend to give up on those". Now, I could choose to get personally offended or some garbage, or to just keep rolling like I have been. I think RPGs are some of the best things to LP, personally. I'm completely biased. And, I am most assured that I know what I'm getting into. (Breath of Fire 3 isn't short in the least! This is a GOOD! thing.) I'm sure some of you have already noticed, but I'm doing a Harvest Moon one simultaneously, while BoF III/3 is the overarching, primary project. And it isn't that hard to do the HM ones at all. But the point is, it isn't gonna just stop or anything.

I've also looked into getting a mic-mic. We have Rock Band 2 mics laying around, so I found a cheap but decent mic stand from Amazon. And a mic clip that attaches to that, and supports the RB mic size. I feel like an idiot for getting a headset now, but hey, at least I can use it for Skype, etc, and actually have it be comfortable.

Also, when the next episode comes out next week, I'll be announcing a small contest with it. It's not much, but hey!

A contest? Dang, I need to order my copy of the game soon, so I'll be able to watch the video that announces it.

It's not that great of a prize really, nothing monetary, etc.:P I'll probably announce it week after next, quite a long time. The end of the contest is actually when the LP is over, so there's plenty, plenty of time. I'll also post it here, spoiler free and all good.

AND YES. An actual mic would be so nice. I should've started with that.

One thing about said "actual mics"...
I use one, myself. It records very quietly. Using Audacity, I'm able to increase the volume after I'm done recording, but it reveals a light buzz in the background. The buzz isn't too much a distraction, but if you decide you want to get rid of it, I can let you know how.

I love the Breath of Fire series. I never finished this one though, I think I got about 1/3 of the way though it?(A bit after Ryu became a adult) I would say it's on my personal top 3 RPG list (Along with Lufia 2, and FF6).
I need to buy it again and beat it finally sometime.

Hope your having fun with it. lol
