Skullmonkeys

Well, welcome to my debut LP. Ever since someone brought my attention to the exsistance of LP threads, I have been quite interested. Well, I would like to do one of my own. So my first one will be one suggested by a good friend of mine:

Armed with a killer butt and a boatload of bizarre weaspons, you're Klaymen, the last clay action hero. Run. Jump. Butt-bounce. Repeat until you save your beloved homeworld from the evil villian Klogg and his Skullmonkey minions.

Skullmonkeys is kind of one of those not-widly-known-of games. It's a platformer by every means of the term and has humor quite similar to Earthworm Jim. So if you are a fan of EWJ, you should enjoy this as well. The game came out back in 1997, a good year for video games... so that's always a good sign.

One of the more interesting facts is that the entire game was created in stop motion clay animation. All animations frames were sculpted by hand and rendered for in-game graphics and animated scenes. Granted, other games have done this such as Clay Fighters, but the charm of this game seems to just linger.

Image

What can you expect? Well, nothing. Just about everything in this game leaves you saying that you didn't see that comming. Of course, unless you've played the game before. So join me as I play through this crazy ass game.

Game over... thread over. Disc distroyed... as it should have been long ago.

The game was a surprise gift several... birthdays or christmases ago, I'm not sure. The game is pretty tight, but can get pretty difficult. The entire game is so strange that it can't help from being awesome. :tup

The concept of the Let's Play thread was born on the forums of Something Awful, where they became popular in early 2006 and were given their own sub-forum in late 2007. A Let's Play thread, often abbreviated as "LP", is a forum thread where one person plays through a game, recording his progress by video, screenshots, or both, and then posts this progress in updates in his Let's Play thread. Most of the time, the screenshots and videos are accompanied by informative, insightful, in-character or just plain funny commentary by the author, making Let's Play threads a great way to get to know the ins and outs of a game in a fun way, without having to go through the hassle of actually playing the damn thing.

    Actually, I did... I made a reference to it in Kajak's C+++ round 3 contest. ^_^

The commentary can get a little more loosened up, but that's something that'll come.
    I think it's a great video nonetheless ^^ Congrats!

    And, seriously, what's not to like about a stop-motion insta-power-ranger bird? =3

Thanks for the feedback. I guess two watching it as good as it's going to get for a while. But if I do these videos weekly, it'll last till christmas.

Anyway, if you have any qestions about the game or anything you would like to add, I'd make sure to mention it in whichever video would be next.

Death reel compilation is good, watching you die seventeen times in the same place is bad.

So, if you're dying a lot, maybe you can consider doing post-record commentary? I mean, editing the video if it needs to and then kinda planning the commentary.
I'm not saying you should, but it's a way of doing it that when it's done right usually makes for a great LP. ^^

Also, that was the first time I heard my screen name. I've always wanted to know if that G was pronounced or not =P I've always thought of myself as The g-nasher. ^^

I always assumed it was off of gnash, as in, to gnash ones teeth. Which is pronounced without the g. So I've always assumed nasher.

    Meh.

Yeah yeah, it comes from there (or, the place it comes from comes from there) – but I'd just never heard it and had to improvise the pronunciation... so I sneaked the g in there. =3

I love how this game manages to be essentially a horror game with monkeys and clay.
