Why do I have the feeling that this will go nowhere at all?

How about this: Anyone who is going to talk about apes in any context that is semi-professional, we probably already know the difference and won't make said mistake. But for those it really who really don't think it makes a difference in the price of rice in China, it's just not that large of concern.

I know it isn't that large of a concern. It is my goal to make it a large concern, or at least as large a concern as it should be if people really think about what it means.

There is a reason that I am motivated to correct this inaccuracy and it isn't simply to be factual. It is to help humans see apes in a different light because it is ultimately important to all of us.

It's sort of the same idea as calling a Lion or a Puma a "kitty" when in fact they are Leonids, not Feilids.

Actually, I was not aware of this.

Yeah, I know, it's a piss-poor example. But I couldn't think of a better one at the time.

I did eventualy think of one, but now I can't remember what it was. XD

Dogs and wolves? Or maybe dogs and foxes and coyotes and what-have-you?

But people don't call dogs wolves or call wolves dogs.

Long story short.

If it lives in Africa, it's an ape.

If it lives in America, it's a monkey and you can identify them by seeing if their tails is worth anything. If a monkey uses its tail for things, it's a monkey.

I'm almost certain that's accurate.

Not that anyone cares. =P

Wow, that's way off. There are monkeys in Africa and Asia called Old World Monkeys that include for example the baboon (which lives in Africa but is not an ape), the macaque, and the langur.

The monkeys in the Americas are called New World Monkeys and include the howler, the marmoset, and the tamarin.

Apes do not have tails at all.

If it works to anything in my defense, the place I remember having read about that is old. It's an animals encyclopedia that used to belong to my grandpa =P

Or I'm just mistaking things.

Ape and anthropomorphic primate are the same thing?

I have never heard of that term specifically and a quick look online seems to suggest it could have a number of meanings. As far as I can tell it seems to be any primate that resembles Homo sapiens in some manner so it may not need to be an ape exclusively (amongst the primates) but I really don't know.

Yeah, I remember reading that anthropomorphic primates were the ones who ended up in Africa, while the rest of the primates, with cool tails and sideways noses were native to America.

Apparently it has nothing to do with apes or monkeys. ;)

He was wrong and it is not because I am saying so, it is because the biological scientific community besides this guy as well as the anthropological community agree that apes are not monkeys.

If you want to put your money where your mouth is, give me this guys contact info and we can see how long he maintains this.
