1.A -A Feeling of Joy

The day I've been looking forward to has come. The day father returns from his mission. He promised me that when he returns that we can get back to my training. My swordsmanship isn't getting any sharper while I sit around without a tutor. I wait for hours, but I don't see him coming. So I head to garden to see what mom is doing. As usual, she is tending the flowers with a smile on her face. She always seems so cheerful even when father is away. What is it that makes her so strong? He is gone most of the time yet she never seems worried. I wish I had such strength. She notices my presence and waves me over. I walk to her and she can't help, but notice me sulking. After all, I was wanting to train with him.

"Sweetheart, don't worry. Your father is just fine. He returned a few hours ago and needed some rest. I would have told you, but you would have woke him."

She was right. I would have bothered him until he gave up. I'm just relieved that he is okay. One in his position is often in dangerous situations. I let out a sigh of relief and then helped mother with her garden. Once we are finished there, we have a picnic under our favorite tree. Nothing is better than her baked bread. The whole meal was delicious, as usual. She then takes out her ocarina and plays a soothing tune. I fall asleep with a smile on my face.

1.A - A Feeling of Joy.

Deep within the forest, the trees grew so thick, that only very few rays from the sun would make it to the forest floor, even at high noon. Though enough of these beams were visible to give ample light throughout the forest. And there Kayn lay nuzzled between the roots at the truck of a tree. Beside him was a small lake. There were a few rays of light that lay over the lake, and when watching, you could see a fish or turtle when they swam through them.

This was the solitude that Kayn desired the most. If you can even call it that. There was life all around. A squirrel skittered up his leg and sat on his knee, looking at him as if to say something, only to proceed up the tree Kayn laid against. As time passed, the light singing of birds and the wind brushing around tree limbs would coax one to sleep, but Kayn was enjoying the serenity too much for sleep. Instead he leaned up and pulled a few things from a bag he had with him. A quill, parchment, and some ink. He then began to draw the scene around him. The thick forest, the tree he lay against by the lake, the rays of light as they softly touched the forest floor. Everything.

Once he finished, he set the parchment down and allowed the ink to dry. He would bide his time by leaning back against the tree and absorb as much of this place as possible.

1.B - Basic Training

Early morning, before the sun even appeared in the sky, I was fast asleep... was. Father decided we were going to practice my swordmanship. Usually we wait until after lunch, but today he is like a man possessed. Mumbling about how little I have progressed and how I should be stronger at my age. Nothing I do seems to be enough for him. I give all I have and then some, this never seems to make him happy. Am I so different from the other generations of my family?

Today he is taking me to a rather odd location for the training, a swamp. How am I suppose to do any sort of training there? It is hard to move and it drasticly decreases my abilities. Father pulls out his blade to signify the beginning of my training, so I respond in kind. He is the first to move, swinging his sword at me with tremedous force. I am able to block the attack, however the impact sent me flying into a nearby tree. I'm not even able to recover before father strikes again. This time I'm barely able to dodge the attack. The poor tree wasn't so lucky. As the tree falls apart, I quickly uppercut with my sword, however father was two steps ahead of me and parries it with ease. He counters with a punch to the face.

"You need to fight more aggressively. How are you ever going to inherit the family name with such feeble strength?"

I've had enough of this! I'll show you what I can do father! I jump in the air then furiously swing my sword at him. He stops the attack yet again, but this time it was as I planned. I blast a bolt of electricity out through my mouth. Was kind of painful to do it that way, though. Father moved his head out of the way, forgetting one important fact. He was in water. While he is being shocked, I use the force of my blade to flip me around and follow up with a kick. Father's face crashes down into the watery abyss. He disapears in the murky water, making me worried. Did I go too far? Shortly, the area begins to bubble. Dad leaps out and launches several fireballs at my direction. I raise my hand and sends out a shockwave in attempt to stop the assault. One is destroyed, two are deflected, however two more are very much diligent. As they approach I can feel the immense heat. Father is trying to kill me! There is no way I can survive this. Moments away from impact they disapear. He lets out a nice laugh.

"Not bad, son. You are getting better. Let us take a short break then we shall continue."

This man has lost it.

1.A - A Feeling of Joy.

For hours I laid awake, my heart filled with anxiousness, waiting for the sun to rise. Finally the day I’ve been waiting for. A cool summer morning like any other. The damp touch of the due still layered the earth. The birds sing as the warm rays of the sun peak over the mountaintops. I jump out of bed and fly down the stairs right out of the house. I head for the small shed hidden under a great oak next to our garden. I grab the makeshift fishing pole uncle helped me make the day before. I exit the shed and look around wildly for uncle. Off in the distance I hear:

“What are you waiting for, Bryce? The fish aren’t going to catch themselves.”

Uncle was already heading towards the river. He carried a pole of his own and a bucket full of stuff. His fingers black from digging up worms all morning. I chase after him as fast as my legs can carry me. After an hours walk, that felt like an eternity we arrive at the fishing spot. It is deep in the forest, isolated from other people. The sounds of nature is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.

I sit on the riverbank next to my uncle and throw in my homemade rod. In a matter of minutes I feel a tug on my rod. I pull in the line with everything I have. My eyes widen as the back of the fish surfaces. It’s within a foot of the shore when it takes a jump and SNAP the line breaks. I lose my balance and fall face first into the river. For a split second I’m filled with anger because a stupid fish got the best of me. When I pull myself out of the water and see my uncle rolling on the ground laughing I couldn’t help but laugh myself.

The rest of the day we sat on that river bank catching fish.

1.A - A Feeling of Joy

It was the Summer Joei festival in the Southern Reach, and the day of Raines' sixth cycle. He couldn't have asked for a better celebration than the Joei. Spectacular food, incredible games, beautiful music, it was everything the Joei could possibly be.

Troops of performers had come from every Reach. Musicians of every kind abounded, including the incredibly talented Lady Mornay, the official poet of the high council. Even Richter, an exiled dwarf who was famed for his fireworks, was in attendance.

But even with all these dazzling sights and sounds and experiences, Raines could only focus on one thing. A pretty little girl, with the voice of an angel, and hair the many colors of the autumn leaves.

He caught her eye but once, and she smiled lightly at him, the innocent smile of a young girl that knew far too much. It was the most perfect night in existence.

SideQuest: 1.B - Basic Training

Deep in the forest, the faint sound of wood clacking together could be heard. The young Kayndar was panting heavily, as he leaned on his wooden staff. After gathering himself up, he dashed again which resulted in another resounding clack. Sweat dripped off his brow as he was locked against another person's staff. Kayn was grunting and digging his feet into the ground trying to overpower his opponent. His opponent being a female Dark Elf by the name of Lei'ella. After a quick push from her own staff, Kayn went flying, landed on his back, and slid to a stop. Lei'ella walked up and held the tip of her staff at Kayn's throat.

"First thing you must understand is that brute force gets you very very little." Lei spoke. "What's more important is that you understand the situation, understand your foe, and understand your ability. Knowing what your enemy is going to do can and will far outweigh being about to overcome their strength." Kayn just laid their silent, trying to catch his breath. "We Dark Elves... or at least those within our bloodline, have the ability to gain an upper hand in battle that none other can. If you train your mind properly, you can sense your opponent’s moves. This is invaluable. Now, Kayndar... Get up! Close your eyes, and focus."

Kayn did as she commanded. "Now, Kayndar. Relax yourself, look past your fatigue and feel around for my presence." Moments later Lei'ella charged at Kayn with all her might, thrusting her staff straight downward. This blow would land directly on the right side of Kayn's neck. But instead, there was such a loud clack, that all the birds in the nearby area took flight. All that could be heard was the flapping of wings and the fading echo of the two weapons meeting.

Lei'ella whispered, "Well done... my son."
