after you get the first 5 stars in the game, take out the cartridge (sounds crazy I know) while the system is on.
place the cartridge back in while holding L+R+Z on the controller. once the game is back on you'll see 130 stars.

Enter these buttons at the first stage to unlock 5 extra lives:
Up, down, left, right, A, B, A, B, A, B, left, right, a, b, down, a, down, select, start, a, b, up, a, left, and finally, b.
...
oh wait, and then the up button.
