Our Topic: The (Un)Limits of RPG Maker 2
What would you like to see done with RPGM2? Any realization for special genres or games that just couldn't be done with RPGM? Extra details and/or special effects?


The sky has almost become the limit. RPG Maker 2 has just landed and the general community is in the learning phase of this new piece of "hardware" (a word you'll probably see me use more often from now on). This is an exciting time to be alive, if I may say so myself. Countless developers are trying out the new hardware (had to try it out. :p) and plotting games to release into the community. If you're wondering how many games are coming down the pipeline, check the Release Forecast on Page 8.

If RPG Maker 1 was an indicator, then I expect the amount of innovation on RPG Maker 2 to skyrocket! With the new inclusion of, among other things, variables, developers been given a license to create almost anything their hearts could desire. Timed mini-games, races, and custom battle systems (CBS) are now very real possibilities. These are new and exciting options not only for developers, but for reviewers like us! In just a couple of days, I've heard plans for an online RPG by the name of Kevar's Grasp from Aznable and a continuation of the adventures of Bomberman in Super Bomberman Tournament 2 from EZALB. In fact, we have an article that explores a few more of those possibilities on Page 3. I'd really love to see how the community uses this hardware to its advantage.

With all of the new options, textures and scripting features, I must stress that everyone write out, or at least outline, their masterpieces. I had the honor of testing out the hardware myself today, and it took me about an hour to get down placing one main character, half of a building, and two events into the game. The sheer amount of things to do demands that you at least have an idea of what your cities will look like, how your characters will interact with others, and how the story will go BEFORE you wantonly create things. This thing is a whole different animal than RPG Maker 1.

I would like to see new types of gameplay features realized this time around. While RPG Maker 2 will always be about making turn-based RPGs, there's more to utilize than ever before. Maybe use that in-battle event to boost the tension in an all-out battle. Perhaps you could change the music in-game and mess with a players head. Let's not forget the programmable Square button! I would like to think that that button shall be used hundreds of times before it's all over, and I couldn't be happier! How about a time officer who could pause time in order to stop a bomb countdown so that he could save an essential person from being obliterated? Square me, baby! :)

Well, this brings about an end to my tirade about RPG Maker 2. I personally wish everyone the best of luck while creating their masterpieces--and I look forward, or should I say...I hope you look forward to more issues from us here at RPGMM, filled with stuff determined to help your wildest RPGM fantasies come true!

I'll probably wake up tomorrow.. uh... afternoon, and realize that this is a completely incoherent pile of junk, but here it goes anyway:

I certainly hope that the camera isn't really as blurrified during movement as it looks in a few screenshots, otherwise I don't think I could even play it. But on the plus side the keyboard, and 8 megs of storage is a real plus. Though I couldn't really care less about the 3d graphics.

Well, I would like to see a LOT more done with RPGM2. I mean, look at what people have churned out with RPGM--despite a limited system for making games. I think that RPGM2 opens whole new genres for RPG Maker games. More opportunities for custom battle systems and mini-games with the addition of variables--no need for substituting swtiches for them anymore. What really disappoints me right now is the fact that RPGM2 doesn't seem to have as much graphical customization. Sure, there may be different ways to tamper with the already exisiting graphical parts, but I wanted to make my own character models, etc. I'm sure a ton of aspiring creators wanted to, as well. In turn, as much as I hate to say it, it dampens my RPGM2 spirits.

Although I feel some of the series features are still partly flawed, I plan on picking this little gem up as soon as possible.

I won't be getting RPGM2, so I don't really expect to see anything. Really makes you wonder why I hang around with people who play it religiously and work at a place dedicated to the RPG Maker series. But I do, so I have to write something.

It was difficult to come up with something completely new with the options given to you in RM1, so I'd hope that RM2 has changed that for the better. But given that it's all in 3d, customizing characters could prove to be difficult. ... At least I think it's 3d... I've haven't really read anything about the game. That's why I webwork. :p

The keyboard is probably the most welcomed new feature, and I really like the new process of actually animating your enemies. Maybe now, people with no clue what they are doing wont make so many crappy CBS's. Leave that to the professionals!
