I would love to, but- I like PSO and Runescape, so it's kinda out of the question since I'm paying $14 a month on online games already.

well, the gameplay isn't that awesome but it's strangely addictive...VERY.

Actually... no. It's really boring. You don't really get any rewards for leveling up other then new classes and maybe armor. The house thing is cool, but nobody can come in and visit, so it's kinda lame. Chocobos? You get to rent them. Big deal. In WoW once you get a mount it's yours. If you die in FFXI, you lose so much exp you have to spend another hour or so getting back to the original spot. It's so tedious. And sometimes dying might not even be your fault as in what happens in online games.

So no... FFXI is a complete waste of time.

Spending days to level up.

Being unable to take advantage of the class/equipment customization. Yes, I know being a White Mage/Warrior is probably a bad idea, but the option was there, and I wanted to use it. Too bad it kept me out of a lot of parties.

Equipment was so dang expensive.

Too much work and time spent to get a Chocobo.

Quests too tedious. If I'm required to get a skull from a skeleton in order to get a subjob, don't make me rely on a person 20 levels over me, and have him fight something like 30-50 skeletons before the needed item pops up! (True story.) Even worse when you only get one skull and you have three or so other party members with you that need the skull.

World of Warcraft and EverQuest Online Adventures were more fun for me. (Too bad the latter has such an empty world now.)
