Have you ever had people who say to you.. Video games are childish. Why are you still doing childish things like playing video games?

My folks ask me this question. Not sure if anyone has taken any heat for being a older person who still enjoys games..

Honestly, I don't see it any different then getting into a good book or watching a good movie.

Have any of you had people tell you your too old to be playing video games?

I've been playing video games my whole life, so my parents are pretty used to it.

It annoys me when people blame video games on such things as violence.

That would totally make me angry.

Girls get it twice as hard, we're supposed to be enjoying Kelly Clarkson, dating people, and going to parties all the time. Games? What would a girl know about Madden, Guitar Hero, and Halo?

I hate guys who think those are the only three franchises that exist in the industry.

I'm 20, and I will play games until I can't anymore from outside circumstances. I have been playing games since I was 4 years old.

Actually, during introductions today in my communications media 101 class, a guy next to me I interviewed liked the same things as I did... it was interesting! I don't think I surprised him, however... and I wish everyone was like that.:p

Actually, I think older people have a right to be playing games. Lest we forget the Atari generation?

I get this every once in a while from my mom and grandparents. Though, it humors me because my mom is an old atari junky and both my grandparents play computer games. They don't make too big of a deal out of it, however.

On a related note, my mom keeps saying that saving is cheating. Amazing how something that is in the directions would be cheating. Then I'm like: "You try playing a 40+ hour game without needing to save." :P

my mother and grandparents harass me about it. they dont see my creativeness expressed in it, they only see it as a waste of time. i just keep on playing them and getting everything out of it that i can.

i dont think they realize that a lot of them have pretty tough mental challenges such as strategy or puzzles. very few games that i play are "mindless".

they didnt seam to feel the same way when i told them i was writing a book. kind of odd considering im writing the same book but with a different medium - rpg maker.

Everybody I know who is my age (35) plays games to some extent. It is getting more mainstream (again) but this time the technology is allowing mature content to rival other medias (books, movies, etc.). Obviously most older people who criticize games do not understand the contemporary video game.

There is a huge difference though Kittykicker. Video games (on the consoles) are still prevented from being Adults Only. Until this changes, they do NOT have equal (relative) potential to books and movies and thus actually ARE locked into a younger demographic.

no, no one has ever said anything like this to me.

Probably because of this.

Me: Gamer (RPGs, RTS, ect.)
Brothers: Gamers (RPGs, MMO, FPS,)

Here is where it starts to get cool.

Mom: A Little bit of a gamer. (Old school Bomberman and Dr.Mario.)
Dad: Gamer. (He plays World of Warcraft and Lord of the Rings Online.)
Grandma(60): Gamer. (RPGs, Tetris. She is huge on Final Fantasy games.)

My family has a long history of video games... so, no one in my family has ever said anything to me.

I've never had anyone within my family say anything...My sister and mother both play games to some extent (sister plays rpgs like Legend of Dragoon and FF, mom loves to play hack and slash games.)

I have had a few outside influences that were skeptical about it. I usually let it slide until I prove that I better than them at several things, then show how video games influence those things. They shut up about it after that.

Heh, I'm suprised no one mentioned Jack Thompson yet.

And the only time I've heard that was while playing Gunbound, I think. It's a MMO shooter... alot like the Worm War games, if you've ever played those. But from my friends and family? Never heard a word about it. Hell, I have a friend of mine (actually his daughter was my friend and I just became really good friends with her whole family over the course of many many years) who is 54 and is still playing games.

I expect to follow suit. Besides... think of it this way. When do you expect to stop? I'm with Fay... until my feeble old hands can no longer grip a controller, or my eyes completely give out... I'll continue to play.

Or something to that manner.

Hum, I forgot to mention who was playing my game console before I did! Haha.

Mom loved Atari, so that's why we even got an NES in the first place. She loves the Mario games, and always played with me as a child. Speaking of which, she was working at the time still, but she always found time to cuddle me in bed and play games with me. Unfortunately, as she got older they were starting to get too out of her reach. The last game she played with me was SF 2: Turbo.

My grandmother HEAVILY dislikes my gaming, to the point where if I buy a game when at the store with her, I can and will get scolded irregardless that I'm 20. She also dislikes my career goal because of this, obviously.:p

You people gifted with gamer grandmas? *bows*

quote from my previous post Fay:

If it wasn't for my grandma, I probably wouldn't be playing Final Fantasy games right now. The first RPG I played was Super Mario RPG, but soon after that, my grandma bought Final Fantasy II for herself, and I just got obsessed with it.

A few weeks ago, I let her borrow some of my DS and GBA games because she just got a DS. She is currently play FFTA, FF6A, FF4A, Phoenix Wright. Yeah, I'm lucky to have a game playing grandma.

No one in my family games (and I men everyone. Not my parents, sister, aunts, uncles, grandparents, even cousins. They are mostly country folk... so their big thing is hunting).

But at least they are supportive.

Fay... if I had your grandmother, I'd make it a point to go out with her and buy a game every time. If nothing else than to stir up controversy and/or maybe beat it into her head that reguardless of all the finger-shaking, it's not going to stop the natural course for teh fellow gamer.

Ah well... I have very few friends that aren't gamers. Compensation ftw?

Maybe its because I'm female? I don't know..
My 51 year old Uncle plays games and TAI.
But yet people are kinda surprised to hear that I enjoy video games too.
