For over three months of working my delivery job at Lucky's Pizza, I never had any major confrontations with my customers (whether they simply don't answer their door/phone, phony addresses/phone numbers, someone not having enough money to pay for the food, or someone not paying for the food at all). Well, whenever I went to make a delivery, I would always, time and again, deliver at a location called "Jefferson: South of the James," a bulk of apartments accompanied by poorly paved/cracked roads.

It was about 10 p.m., and I was sent to deliver a usual order to one of the apartments. This time around, a young, Black teenager asked me if I was delivering the food I was carrying to his room, and I said I wasn't. The transferring of the food to the customer in exchange for the monetary payment went reasonably fast. However, as I was putting the money into my pocket, I saw that same kid looking at me from 10-15 feet away, and then he disappeared from my view. I start heading back to my car, putting the pizza bag into the backseat, and then heading for the driver's side. I put in my ignition key and am about to close my door, when the teenager from earlier, along with two of his cohorts stop my door from closing, and they immediately demand that I empty out my pockets (within moments, I'm hit very hard on my hand and head by a wooden stick).

I get out of the car, and I see the three Black teens, the one in the middle wearing shades with his dukes up, demanding again that I empty my pockets. Since I'm a very passive person, I did flinch once or twice when each of them was pretending to charge at me. Very calmly, I told them to leave them alone, but these guys weren't having it. I said it once again, a bit louder, hoping to prevent an altercation, when the teen in the middle charged at me with a few punches. I wasn't going to give them the money, so I attempted to fight back with a few punches of my own, but my inexperience in fighting proved to be an advantage to this attempted muggers. It immediately turned into a brawl, myself against three ticked-off muggers wanting the money I had in my pocket. I only fought them for a few seconds, and immediately started heading back to my car, but not without receiving several hard blows to my back and head with fists and the wooden stick. I successfully got into the car, locked the doors (and I also lost a flip-flop outside, since it was all I had to wear last night), and I got spit on through the window by one of the muggers.

I finally got away, terrified from the event that just took place. I called my boss on the cell phone after I got on the road and told him "I'm done. I'm freaking done." I was crying uncontrollably on the phone (the kind of crying where you can hardly breathe while you're talking), trying to tell my boss that I almost got robbed, and that I was finished with this delivery job. I'm still driving, and I'm about 3 minutes away from the shop; my boss is trying to get me to calm down, and wants to know where I'm located, and by then, I'm literally screaming at him on the phone. Sam gives the phone to his other employees because he can't even understand what I'm saying. I eventually hang up the phone and arrive at the restaurant, crying, scared, pissed, and suffering minor injuries (two big knots on my head, a couple bleeding fingers, and a sore pinkie). My boss comes outside, opens my door, and asks me what happened.

I tell him, and then he tells me to go to the bathroom to wash up. I'm completely barefoot when I go inside the shop, but I'm still fortunate to be alive after the altercation that went on. I call my parents later, and my siblings come to check on me, making sure I'm all right, and everything. My boss and my co-worker ask me if I want to go back to the place, so that I can identify the perpetrators, but my family insists that I should just go home, since I've had a pretty rough night. I decide to go with the family's decision, give my boss the money that was attempted to be taken by the muggers ($130+), and spend the night at a hotel with my brother and cousin to cool off (also because the thunderstorm the previous night took away our electricity).

As of right now, I'm feeling a little better, but I still have the knots on my head, proving extremely sore upon touching the spots; I have since taken eight aspiring in the hopes of ceasing the headache I have. Additionally, I'm not working at either delivery shop (the pizza place, and the Chinese place) for the rest of my vacation (I only have a week left). Still, this night was absolute hell, and I pray I never go through this ordeal again.

I'm sorry to hear what happened.
I gotta say, it sucks terribly to live with the fact that you may be mugged anytime. Streets are like that over here. Walk fast, always be cautious. The feeling I've got is that all this stress at least makes us age faster.
I've suffered mugging attempts twice (both frustrated), but never really got hit. Glad to know you're recovering... sh*t, three on one with a wooden stick is something.

And as absurd as that may sound, perhaps you can consider yourself lucky...? In that situation, they could have easily taken the car.

It sucks, doesn't it? And there's nothing we can do about it... only try to recover and try to resume normal life. It's a sad and terrible aspect of society.

Well, it's good to see you came out alive, BW.

I'll help you fight them next time, too, if you'd like to take vengeance. Trust me, even if the odds would still be three against two that way, we'd win for sure since you've got me at your back. ^_^

almost mugged?

Umm...

Main Entry: mug
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Forms: mugged; mug·ging
: to assault (an individual) usually with intent to rob

Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Law, © 1996 Merriam-Webster, Inc.

You were mugged!

I'm glad that things didn't turn out worse than they did, but I have to say, that I think that you were taking an awful big risk (maybe of even losing your life!) for $130.00!

Any of them could have pulled a gun or a knife, or even if they all three had been really hyped up (on drugs or booze maybe), they could have beaten or stomped you to death!

What had your boss previously told you about such events when you were hired? Did he tell you to fight back, and to never let the money go without a fight? If so, he's not a very good boss! They have insurance to cover losses such as that!

I'm sorry, but no amount of money is worth risking your life over! Especially such a small amount! I know, that pride and other principals come into play at such a time, but I would hope that if this kind of thing ever happens again, that you would just let them have the money!

Take care :)

Thanks again, guys.

@Shrekslady: You're right. It probably wasn't worth it, but I at least wanted to prove to myself that I'm not always a passive pushover.

@Genji: Colonial Heights, eh? I still don't know whether I'll be "safer" there.

As I mentioned in the chat, I think they would've attacked him even if he did cooperate.
