First off, this isn't a "Haha, I'm PS3 bias and this info makes my opinion superior" thread. I just found it interesting and thought I'd share...

The information was in this issue of game informer... but the online version doesn't have the story... just the printed.

Quote:
If you read the gaming blogs during the PS3 launch, Sony was dead on arrival. It certainly wasn't the smoothest of launches, with console shortages, already lofty pricetags inflated due to eBay auctions, no online strategy to rival Xbox life, and a dearth of compelling games for the nascent mechine.

But did the PS3 really limp out of the gate that badly? Putting its initial sales up against its direct competitor, the Xbox 360, the numbers tell a diffrent tale. According to NPD Group data, the PS3 sold approximately 902,000 consoles during it's first three months in the United States alone. The Xbox 360 sold 50,000 fewer consoles during its first three months on the market in the U.S., coming at roughly 854,000. Comparing the PS3 with its highly successful predecesors, it outsold both the PSone and PS2 during the same tiem frame. So why the doom and gloom surrounding Sony?

Quote:
Dispite the public perception of Sony's folly, the console is sellign well without a true blockbuster title, and the marquee games will come in time. Michael Pachter, analyst with Wedbush Morgan Securities, sees the console's future as abeing bright. "a year from now we'll all be laughing because teh PS3 will have a price cut, Blu-ray will be the standard high-definition movie format, and there will be a lot of software for the box."

When forcasting the future of the consoles, both Pachter and Billy Pidgeon, an analyst fith IDC, see the PS3 trailing in the short term, but breaking even and eventually overcoming the Xbox 360 and Wii. "It will be a slow build," says Pidgeon. "I expect the AWii and Xbox 360 to stay in teh lead in North America for the next two years. Where that flips is in 2010, 2011, where the PS3 has a huge install base and surpasses while Nintendo and Microsoft are prepping for their next boxes.

"I think it ends up in first," says Pachter. "But all three consoles will all ahve 30 percent or greater market share, and all of them will win.

Not promising for me, who can't afford a console that will get games that go to the console with the highest market share.

And yet I wonder why I always see Sony PS3 in stock, but never any Wiis. Must be just this part of the country.

Reguardless of the numbers, Wii's are cheaply priced making them easier to get as far as finances go. And to be honest, I don't see any more PS3's on shelf than I do Wii's. In fact, when I got my PS3... some guy had to get it out of the back because there were none on display.

Yeah, but the Wii is beating the crap out of both systems in terms of hardware and software sells right now, and I don't see it breaking even anytime soon. Let's face it, the Wii targets everyone, that's their strategy and it worked. You get the mainstream audience, and some of the hardcore interested in trying something new, and you got the market.

Look at the April 2007 numbers

Quote:
Nintendo DS 471k
Wii 360k
PlayStation 2 194k
PlayStation Portable 183k
Xbox 360 174k
Game Boy Advance 84k
PlayStation 3 82k
GameCube 13k

Top 10 Software Items- April 2007 Units
NDS POKEMON DIAMOND VERSION NINTENDO OF AMERICA APR 2007 EVERYONE (E) 1.045 M
NDS POKEMON PEARL VERSION NINTENDO OF AMERICA APR 2007 EVERYONE (E) 712K
WII SUPER PAPER MARIO NINTENDO OF AMERICA APR 2007 EVERYONE (E) 352K
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE NINTENDO OF AMERICA FEB 2007 EVERYONE (E) 249K
360 GUITAR HERO 2 W/ GUITAR ACTIVISION MAR 2007 TEEN (T) 197K
PS2 GUITAR HERO 2 W/GUITAR ACTIVISION NOV 2006 TEEN (T) 142K
360 SPIDER-MAN 3 ACTIVISION APR 2007 TEEN (T) 117K
PS2 SPIDER-MAN 3 ACTIVISION APR 2007 TEEN (T) 105K
PS2 GOD OF WAR II SONY MAR 2007 MATURE (M) 101K
PS2 MLB '07: THE SHOW SONY FEB 2007 EVERYONE (E) 79K

Wii is selling twice as much, and more than both put together. So the real winner right now is DS, which is also insanely popular in Japan as Nintendo is just catching up to demand there. Hell the PS2 is still more popular than the 360/PS3 right now. So certainly after some price cuts they'll go up, but unless something drastic happens I think the Wii will be winning this race, and if not it certainly beat everyone out of the gate by a lot.

Just saying the numbers don't lie, and right now they say Wii.

Yeah but I haven't heard anything on the horizon. However according to Wikipedia (not the best source) 360 is at 10 mil, PS3 3.6 mil, and Wii 6.8 mil. Of course I doubt Nintendo is too worried as the DS is at 40 mil, neither is Sony with the PSP at 10 mil.

So yeah we'll see, and I do think 360 and PS3 will pick up towards the end of the generation as graphics ramp up, and developers start figuring out how to program for those systems (well take full advantage of them). But for the moment Nintendo is topping the charts.

I don't care about the numbers at all.

All I know is that I have no desire to get a Wii until I'm sure that there are games that I like and I won't tire of using the controller.

I don't care about Blue Ray, I don't care about Blah Blah, all I care about regarding the PS3 is that I have a gaming reason to buy it. RIGHT NOW I see none and when I do I'll reconsider, but they'll have to drop the price a lot before they can start laughing, otherwise we'll be laughing at them (again).

Let's talk again sometime after September 25th.
