EDIT by Draygone: This has long since been proven untrue. Unstickying now.

The Playstation 3 uses "virtual memory cards" for PS1 and 2 games. It only allows 2 virtual memory cards to be loaded on the system at a time. This means that any RPGM1 game that uses more than two memory cards will be UNPLAYABLE on the Playstation 3, since you cannot swap memory cards during play, like is need for games that often have one system card, 1 scenario card (or more) and a dedicated art card.

Just wanted to get this info out there before people go trading their PS2s in for PS3s.

Damn it. Why do they always cap this crap? I mean, I have 4 PS1s and a PS2 (I'll have 4 PS2s when they drop to 20 bucks), so I'm not really hurting, but damn.

You can't really blame them though. no other PS1 or 2 game has ever used more than one memory card at a time, much less 3 or 4 like RPGM1. Why would sony ever think to allow people to load more than two virtual memory cards at a time?

you can have as many virtual memory cards saved on the machine as you want, but only two can be used at a time. I actually think the virtual memory card thing is really cool. lets you have every single RPGM2 and 3 game on your system at once.

Well, if you can only have 2 loaded I don't see the issue. i mean as long as there can be more in stored in the harddrive, I actulay think this would be an IMPROVEMENT. (no more having to do potentaly dangerous card swapping mid-play) when you reach the end just load up the next card and you'll be set to go! :D

Um, I dont think you realize what I'm saying.

Many RPG Maker games require you to swap memory cards during the initial loading because they have a system card, a scenario card, and an art card (or sometimes multiple scenario cards). you cannot swap virtual memory cards during a game. so you cannot play any RPG Maker game that requires more than two cards.

Well, except games that use the multiple system card trick, since you have to reset the system anyways for that, which would give you a chance to change the virtual memory cards. but scenario and art cards wouldnt work, because those have to be loaded while the RPG Maker software is running.

here's an example.

You go to play a game that has a system, scenario, and art card. you can only load two virtual memory cards on the system at a time. you need three, or the ability to swap memory cards during a game (when it prompts you to during the inital game loading sequence). So you cannot play that game.

I think that that would be a little bit dumb. I mean there are plenty of times where you make/have game saves spread accross mutiple cards, and accessing them would require that you load up one while the game is at the very least, idle. I'm not talking about RM eather, what if you have a game that you have items in and want to drop in an existing game with out disrupting thegame your in? I can tink of SEVERAL games, not just RM, where shuffling cards is insanely usefull. (gran turismo comes to mind, as does many fighting games.)

A pain, yes. This thing is like $13 bucks. A shame they just didn't put a memory card slot in the system in the first place.

But IMHO, it's better to play RM1 games on the PC via EPSXE anyway...

They don't allow hot-linking, and yet they took those images from IGN.com.

I'm assuming you're talking about the memory card adaptor? Not really sure how that works. PS1 and PS2 games may not be able to recognize it.

I think it's save to assume that they accept PS2 cards, as depicted in the pic on the site.

But you may be right about PS1. Again, though, If you get the Playstation emulator running, you wouldn't have to worry about memory cards in the first place.

But will PS1 and PS2 games even know to look for the memory card in the adaptor? For all we know they'll only look for the virtual memory cards. I thought I read that the adaptor is only needed to transfer old saves to the PS3 hard drive.

I can't source it, because I can't remember... But I think I remember hearing that the adaptor reads like a slot would for PS2. If not, it reads vurtually...

the adapter is only to copy memory card data to a virtual memory card. the games cannot access them.

Man, you'd think they would try to work that out...

That's not cool. If I'm going to pay $500 bucks for a system, you'd think they could do something as simple as recognize older formats a little more easily.

But on the other hand, having my PS2 memory card backed up on the PS3 hard drive seems a bit more convieniant actually. I mean, I haven't filled up one of those cards yet. So it's not like that's going to be a problem... as far as PS1 is concerned, (for the thrid time) I use emulators.

Well this hasn't been tried out so you never know. We have no idea about how the ps3 handles the games for the older systems. It has the interface of the psp, there will be some hacks and all but still isn't this just speculation since no one has really tried to see if its true. (yes I know the ps3 isn't out)

Then have you figured out a way to play RPGM1 games that take more than two memory cards on ePSXe? I've tried exiting out of gameplay, switching "memory cards" and continuing gameplay, but it doesn't seem to recongize that I made the switch. Least, not last I checked.
