As a fan of Bruce Campbell, when I heard they were going to remake The Evil Dead without him in the movie, I was skeptical, to say the least. How can you have this movie with THE MAN?

But today, on a whim, I decided to go and see what it was and....holy crap, this was a pretty damn good remake. This movie does what I really like to see with remakes: it makes small nods to the original movies but does it's own thing. This movie has some amazing cinematography, with all types of interesting camera angles, lighting effects, the whole nine yards. The effects are almost all practical, except a few that are quite well done regardless. The movie has that funny/horror, Raimi-esque feel all throughout. The actors themselves do a good job connecting themselves to the audience, as well.

The movie does keep you guessing til the end. I really enjoyed this movie and I would gladly put down money day one for Evil Dead 2 and (please please) Army of Darkness remakes.

Ixzion says: Go see Evil Dead! Definitely the best horror remake in the last 10 years.

Spoiler for movie:

The final scene with the chainsaw kill was absolutely AWESOME. Visually impeccable.

Edit: Actually, there are NO CG effects in the movie! Holy crap:

BTW, don't go to the link if you haven't seen the movie. There's a minor spoiler here. I'll just copy pasta.

Fede Alvarez, Director wrote:
We didn't do any CGI in the movie. There's no CGI in the movie. Everything you will see is real, which was really demanding. This was a very long shoot, 70 days of shooting at night.

There's a reason people use CGI it's cheaper and faster, I hate that. We researched a lot of magic tricks and illusion tricks.

I was completely mistaken, then.

I didn't think it was a bad film, but they didn't really push the envelope here as far as the genre goes. While the first one sticks out because of it's campy nature and unique blend of horror and comedy, the new one is just straight up horror. And to that extent, it's not much different from any other horror film. Though I will say that they did as good of job as they could stripping it of any humor and going dead serious.... much less NOT having Ash at the lead character.

You can at least tell they treated it with as much tender loving car as they could. There were so many shout outs and homage to the original... which I appreciated. Like, they somehow managed to copy, room for room, the entire cabin. From the placement of windows and chairs to... everything. Also, it would take me a very long time to point out every similarity in scenes. Which is weird since this is a reboot of the entire movie. So yeah, it wasn't bad. But I really missed our hand-chainsaw, shotgun wielding Ash.

Lantis says: Moderately groovy.

Haven't seen it yet but I love the Evil Dead movies. I'm hoping they're not trying to set their sights high and try to "change horror". It would be nearly impossible to try to emulate the success of Evil Dead. Like Lantis said it blended horror and comedy but you just cannot top Bruce Campbell, the guy is charismatic, unique, and had a presence in those films that actors these days would have trouble matching. I'm glad it's getting good reviews though, but I'll have to see it one day.

The original was straight up horror too, but you don't have someone influenced by the Three Stooges like the original to let it show through whether they want to or not. :P

I'm fairly sure chopping off your own arm after having a fight with it as it smashes plates in your face and trapping it under a bucket, weighted down by books, the top one reading "A farewell to Arms" counts as humor. Don't think that counts as straight up horror.

Oh right. The remake had a similar situation. But you're right, the first one's humor came only from it's campy nature and low budget. It wasn't intentional.

Well, I'm sure some of it was meant to be campy, because they were still Stooge fans then. The remake looks good, but it DOES take itself more seriously than even the first one.

I prefer ED2 anyway.

I hope they do an ED2 remake with the horror/comedy, that would be interesting.

Quote:
Sony/Tri-Star's Evil Dead won the weekend over Paramount's solid performer G.I. Joe: Retaliation (in its second weekend) with a $26 million debut. According to the distributor, the audience was 56% male and 56% was 25 or older. This weekend overseas the horror film played in 21 markets and earned $4.5M. This new Evil Dead has only a $17 million reported budget, so not a bad profit margin for the update of the 1981 Sam Raimi horror classic titled The Evil Dead.

Strong praise and a solid box office debut? Evil Dead 2 is already brewing in the pot.
