Final Fantasy IIID
Square Enix ups the dimensional count in the DS's first FF game.
by Anoop Gantayat

October 5, 2005 - Nintendo's DS press conference in Japan today provided Square Enix with the perfect opportunity to solidify some of its recent moves with the Final Fantasy series. We were most interested in learning what is up with DS Crystal Chronicles and all the Final Fantasy port projects now in development.

First off, the ports. The first two FF games are already available in one package for the Game Boy Advance. An updated version of part IV was recently announced, also for the Game Boy Advance. So that leaves III, V and VI as the pre-VII Final Fantasy games that are still screaming for a revival.

Final Fantasy III was announced for the DS months ago, but today Square Enix showed that the game is more than just vaporware. The company shared a trailer for the game showcasing, surprisingly, 3D visuals for both characters and fields, a far cry from the original's 8-bit graphics.

Very nice!

Because you wanted FF3 in the original sprites?

No, that's just f*cking lame. I have lost all faith in squaresoft. Like, seriously, this is just to make it more appealing to new age gamers so they can make more money off of it.

It's the same reason I absolutely detest FFX-2.

f*ck squaresoft. ^_^

Well, I gotta agree with you on that one. I would play it with sprites or polys.

And they're Squenix now. :p

Well it's not like FF3 came here before.

Aside from that, I don't think FF4-6 need to be ported AGAIN. (FF4 went to the WonderSwan Color as well as the PS1). Except maybe FF5, because the PS1 version of that had those load time deals. Not nearly as bad as FF6's, but they were there.

I'm personally, well, excited! Not over FFIII so much, but I don't own a wonderswan color, and the load times on Chronicles and Anthology are horrible, and my FFV disc doesn't load anymore.

Hurray for GBA ports of IV-VI!!!:DD

I'll be swallowing those up, yay portable final fantasies that I actually LOVE.

NOOOOO!!!
NOT TEH 3D GRAPHICS!
ORIGINAL PWNS!
...dang.

FF3 was one of the best SNES game of all time(in my opinion), but the 3d graphics will make it less appealing to me.

Fortunately for me, my SNES is still running smoothly(as opposed to my NES, which broke a month after I got it).

Wait... do you mean the US FF3 or the Japan FF3? The title's confusing to me...

Final Fantasy 3, the only FF game not released in the US. Not the one with Terra, Locke, etc.

FFIII looks really beautiful on the DS, its like a mix of FFIX and FFCC. So I am most hyped for that one.

i'm really excited too.:) gives me another reason to buy a DS & gives me another reason to play through final fantasy IV, V & VI for the ump-teenth time. are these re-issues primarily cash motivated for Square? sure. do i care? no. also, it gives everyone a legit way to enjoy the snes series of final fantasy for handhelds.

and what's wrong with a 3d update for III? i think it's a perfect way to introduce this lost game to a new audience. i've never played it before, and knowing it's going to be totally reworked and graphically updated, i couldn't be happier. doing things this way was pretty much mandatory for square anyway. you can't blame them, and since there are ways to enjoy the original nes version of III elsewhere(mainly emulation, i guess), a 3d version is nothing but a great idea. i'm sure it was either a matter of re-drawing the sprites to 32-bit standards, or to go ahead and utilize the (albeit slighty unsophisticated) 3d processing power of DS. 3d is the vast majority of game releases and eclipses 2d as the game engine of choice & popularity. so, square is simply trying to sell more copies to more people. it's a mix of math, business & money. we should all be used to this trend by now! :\ plus, you never know, maybe an unlockable version of the translated original will sneak itself in somewhere.. one can always hope.

squaresoft might be a shadow of their former selves, but, they still make solid titles.
