It's out. People I've talked to so far say it's even better than XP. Anybody here making the upgrade?

I was planning on it, because people have told me it wouldn't be as much a power hog as Vista was. However, upon looking at the system requirements, I'm not so sure that's the case.

I will be getting 7. Definitely. I just have a few games ahead of it in my budget.

As far as the SysReqs,
Quote:
If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
That's nothing. A dual core 2.5GHz is like a seventy bucks. My cookie cutter HP has a 2GHz Dual Core. And its like... 3-4 years old?

Quote:
1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
Again, nothing. Most big box store PC's come with 2 gigs already and one can EASILY and with no skill, upgrade to 4gigs for around 60-100 dollars. That was the first thing I did with my PC. It was also the beginning of my self taught (ok google helped....And Lantis) PC know how. Admittedly I am no genius, but I can get it done.

Quote:
16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
No big there. Like above, typical machines will have 250-500 out of the box. Super simple upgrade and CHEAP. Hell, a 1TB drive will barely be $100.

Quote:
DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
DirectX 9 is like five years old or something. Some new games, like Crysis, require 10 for the higher settings, so I don't really see this as any kind of issue. Even 11 is in beta now. Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) 1.0 shipped with Vista and 1.1 ships with 7. As far as I understand, you won't have to even look for this or check for it. Should just "happen." But I could be wrong.

If anyone can point out anything inaccurate about any of what I said please do. I won't take offense.

I've got 2 Gigs of memory (like you said, standard). I'd hate to have to open up my computer, though. It's why I haven't already opened up to see what I could do for graphics. I was hopeful that Windows 7 would be less of a power hog because this game I use frequently requires a more powerful graphics card (as well as a more powerful processor) with Vista than if you were still using XP. I think what I'm going to do is wait until the site for this game updates for Windows 7 requirements. (It's an MMO, so it's bound to happen sometime.)

It may be better than XP, but is it $300 better than XP? Getting the fresh install professional version is pretty much a must.

Can you imagine how weird it would to stumble on shake by yourself? That'd be funny.

Also, for anyone curious: Dex Drives and the Dexplorer software both work just fine in 7.

Before upgrading, if you are thinking of making a disaster scenario rescue cd of your current setup, I think you should check out Macrium Reflect Free Edition.

Quote:
# Create a disk image whilst running Windows using Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS).
# Image to Network, USB, FireWire drives and DVD.
# Built in scheduler.
# 32 bit and native 64 bit versions.
# Industry leading compression levels and speed.
# Linux based Rescue CD with Network access and full GUI. Only 6.5MB in size!
# Built in CD/DVD packet writing engine. Supports packet writing to DVD DL media with Windows Vista.
# HTML log files.

Simply select the drive or partition you wish to back up, click create image, select destination (like usb drive, external hdd, dvd), hit finish and let it do its thing. You can also select from several compression levels to balance disc size and imaging speed. And you can choose between Linux based rescue cd with network access and GUI or BartPE plugin creating a BartPE based boot cd.

I didn't run into any issues when I moved from Vista to 7, but I went with a reformat and fresh install. The entire time, I was concerned I would have to go back to an eight month old backup as I hadn't made one since then, but with the move on the mind, I went out and found this for my other PC as well as for anyone else who is interested in a free, solid rescue disc creation tool.

Since I'm pretty sure that I'm not only the sole Mac user on the Mag, I'm the only person who actually likes Mac, I'm not sure exactly why I feel the need to report that OS X Snow Leopard has been released, and it is an exceptional OS.

But I do, all the same, and at the very least I'm fairly positive it wouldn't merit its own topic, so here I do so.

A review, for any at least theoretically interested: http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/co ... gn_id=yhoo
