And ser x estar? Is that hard to learn? I've always figured it would be... but I've never seen anyone try to learn it.

context is a beautiful thing ^__^

and i didn't learn either of them to be honest, i just learned of their existance/co-existance.

@gnasher - yeah ... english doesn't have anythign like that lucky for foreign people. it just combines any two vowels to make whatever sounds you feel like. i figure though, if i'm going to remember any words, i'm only going to remember the ones i'd use. so ive decided not to remember 'obrigado' cus that would be too much work. i once wrote a letter to my german teacher who was going on leave to raise a baby.. and started it with "Leiber Frau," >_<! i was just copying from a book though and in the book it was "Leiber Hans" ... at any rate she had a good laugh.

the book i'm reading .. see i'm not learning portugeuse or anything.. dont' get me wrong. i'm just reading this book that people might use to learn it. it's quite funny acutally, it starts out with learning how to show someone your passport. then telling them that you are married. and ive just got to the part where you learn how to conjugate estar .. and 4 pages ago it conjugated ter and the page before that gave a list of adjectives .. my favourites being 'cultural' and 'industrial' ... <_< strangest learning curve EVER. but it works for me because i'm not trying to learn the language.. just learning interesting tidbits ABOUT the language. ^_^ but it's got no tapes or anything right, so i have no idea how any of it is pronounced but me and this guy in work were looking at the pronounciation guide at the front .. .and it has the following entries:
x shout baixa
z zoo/shout fazar/faz

where is the x or the z in shout?!?!?! we came to the conclusion that (obviously) it's z like in zoo.. and then you just shout any word that has a z in it. and x is just... x ... and you shout anything of those words too. extra loud if it has both letters. ^__^ good language skills us! XD

the books also has a 'dicas culturais' section at the end of each chapter.. the lastest one tells us about a company Antártica whose slogan is "estupidamente gelada" which i found quite amusing ... *Shrug*

You are only having problems because you must SOLVE for X. Yes... it's really math. That's how they get'cha.

Strangest learning curve ever indeed! Hahaha I had a good laugh with your post. =D

x is usually pronounced like the english 'sh'.
Though z is always pronounced like 'zap' and there's nothing to it in 'shout'. O.o

Antartica is a beer. Not a particularly good one, though... just a regular one. To the other people, 'estupidamente gelada' means 'stupidly cold'. ^^
Beer ads on the telivision here tend to be the best, most creative ads, for some reason.

Conjugating estar is, I think, one of the hardest things you'll learn ever =P

No pronunciation, eh? So you haven't come across nasal sounds (like 'não') or the R that people have trouble with (like in 'Maria')?

Let me know more about these dicas culturais of yours, they sound interesting =D

Whenever you can, look up the meaning of torcida and saudade. These are the words I personally think the english language lacks the most. ^^

wiki says http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudade
about right? english though it has tons of words.. seems to be missing lots of words for complicated things that other languages have. i think this is party due to meanings of words changing over time to become more ambiguous as people learn them and use them wrong... but also just.. cus it's just... inferior or something.

google translator gave me 'crowd' but wiki says this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torcida which makes me thing ive seen the word somewhere that had to do with spain but who knows. may have made it up. ^^ is this the definition you meant?

and yeah i have come across the word 'não' but whether its' a nasal sound or 'shout' i have no idea =P i was going to get the 2 brazilian girls who were stay with me this past 2 day to read a bit to me.. but they had to leave early as their flight was too early to stay another night. oh well! next time.

the dicas culturais said that brazilian people love this beer. that indeed is creative, literal translation though idon't know if thats an uncommon word to use in brasil but they'd never use 'stupid' to describe something in english.. thats why it amused me. :lol

and i havn't tried to learn estar i just sort of read it and pass on. maybe one day when my brain works again i'll be able to learn things. but i think i'm doing pretty well just reading stuff at this point. like.. anything at all!

i'll tell you what though - i can't say the word 'merde' ... and it's not really the best word to be walking around practicing is it? XD

also i can spell my name in hindi characters =D but i can't show that on the computer <__< ... but i learned that quite a while ago.

learning for today is this: gato no peito <3
"cat in the breast (singular)"
^____^
there was a song called 'el gato gordo' so i knew it meant cat. (old knowledge)
what i have just recently read in the book told me that 'no' basically means 'in the' (recent knowledge)
and i can infer that peito is breast. but google translator said yes it is. (new knowledge)

i think this is a better learning curve, não é? (read: i like boobs)

Yeah, those are the meanings. See, they're so awesome there's wiki pages for them. Actually, the wiki page of torcida refers to what we call 'torcidas organizadas' (organized), which are specific to football – but the term torcida means a group of people that are cheering and rooting for something.

That english lacks this word explains a lot about how people watch things there =P

Well, when we say 'stupidly something' we mean like, 'a lot of something'. It's not that uncommon. And it isn't negative, either, in that sense.
Also we say 'ridiculous' and mean 'extremely easy', and that's also kinda weird.

Aww, you learned something from a filename =3

'Merde' is French, portuguese is 'merda'. It's not hard to say. The 'e' you say open, like in 'Beth', the 'a' is also open, and the 'r' you can pretty much choose how you say it, you'll get different accents that way. In Rio we'd speak it as the 'h' in 'hunger', and if you say the standard english 'r', you get the accent from interior São Paulo and other things to the south ^^

Dunno about French, though...

I'm learning Japanese at my school, and my textbook is like a textbook that would be used by foreign business men going to Japan on a business trip. There are several chapters discussing how to introduce yourself to the president of a Japanese company.
