There seems to be a trend lately with anime to be as depressing as possible. I've never noticed it before, but there's a ton of tragedy stories in anime.

Horrible, horrible pasts. Horrible accidents. Loves not meant to be.

Am I alone in wanting a nice anime where everyone just does sh*t and there doesn't have to be a gut-wrenching ending or stuff?

Edit: I'm not saying that these are bad animes, because they really do touch me. But I feel irritable when I have my heartstrings tugged.

Hasn't anime always been that way? Isn't that like saying what is with all the tough physical grit of comic books?

so you cried every other episode.... it got so old.

I like stuff like Genshiken and Tenchi. Not too serious. Just a good ol' slice of life.

I've always been a fan of tragic endings. It's the generic "happily ever after" endings that I really get tired of. That's why when something ends in a way that you expect, it'll affect me more and my overall view of whatever media (anime, games, movies, books) it may be.

Besides, the ratio to tragic anime to non-tragic is really steep...

That's what I'm saying... the tragic anime's ARE change... most the time it goes: Happy Days < Growing Evil < Great Trials < Victory < Happy Days again.

Or even worse, follow the Power Rangers theme of: Everythings cool today < Oh no, another pathetic enemy from the main antagonist < nothing works on him but the same finishing move < Everything cool again. And repeate the very next day/episode. Kind of like Salor Moon.

That's why I consider these tragic anime's like Kannon and Air more of a change...

The thing is, most of the audience doesn't actually follow most of the anime that comes out. There are close to and sometimes more than 200 new shows every year, and yet, most of the north american audience cant name more than 50 from the last 20 years.

Just look more. The ratio isn't really that steep.

"emo" is in these days, so its no wonder anime is following with that. dont forget that alot of the popular animes are also tragity so the newer ones are trying to capture the same sucess. most new anime is crap anyway, just copied knock offs that come at the heels of any sucessful product.

I generally prefer not to watch sad shows. Ya know, because of my depression. However, with anything there needs to be some sort of balance. If an anime if depressing all through out and it ends that way, all that is going to do is piss people off. Which reminds me of X. Got so damn sad and then ended being even worse. Didn't feel satisfied at all. Bitter sweet endings are okay, though.

For some people, tragedy is a meaningful existential frame of mind that gives purpose. I don't really watch Anime so I don't know if this is reflected, but tragedy is not only about being sad or depressed. Sometimes it is about being meaningfully in tune with the minor key rather than the major key. If one's mindset is so tuned, tragedy is genuinely beautiful in that sense.

The only animes I've ever watched are (in order) Saint Seiya, Yu Yu Hakusho, Shurato, Samurai Warriors, DBZ, and Naruto (only up to episode 80 or so).

So, honestly, I have no idea what you mean by 'sad anime' =D
