i moved to edmonton and had to ship a few things. i decided that ups was a decent company as they have shipped stuff through my store. i shipped a few boxes and also wanted to ship my tv. i had them package it (cost me 50 bucks) and sent it off.

after a few days i arrived in edmonton and my stuff did too. my tv didnt arrive. i called ups over a few days to find out when it was coming, it waqs misshipped twice. eventually they arrived. upon opening it i found that it wasnt just broken but completely obliterated.

every single corner was smashed, the screen was broken so badly that you could hear the plasma screen shifting around. my moms bf took a video of it which ill add here(warning, its in hd and 130 megs, 2mins and cuts off the shattered screen showing). the guy at the ups store told me that shipping it was dangerous and had me sign a hand writen note saying they wernt responcible for the damage. i bought insurance on the loss of the tv but i couldnt buy damage insurance which is what i wanted most. even still i thought it would make it, maybe a scratch or two but not completely ruined.

the tv packaging was bullsh*t. the box they made for it was carved out of seveal other boxes, not a custom box that i thought they would make. they put bubble wrap around it but never bothered to insulate the corners with styrofoam. the box didnt even have fragile written on it, though i doubt even that addition would of saved it from the abuse it recieved.

how can a shipping company exist that cannot get your product to your place safely? shouldnt a company be able to wrap your product so that it can endure the hardship of shipping? for 50 bucks i should of gotten a profesional wrapping job and instead i got garbage. the workers where rough with everything, tossing my other boxes out of the truck in my own driveway which resulted in several items of little value being broken. the box of my tv itself was more then likely dropped a few times given that each corner was broken and one so damaged that the metal frame was bent.

i complained to the rep but they said its up to the store to decide. i know they wont agree so im going to have to go up to corperate level. if they dont give in then ill put this on youtube.

first rule of shipping, there are no shipping companies. they can ship paper like the post office and empty carboard box but not anything of value. as a business i would never accept my merchandise to be shipped with such disreguard for its safety. ive lost the cost of thre tv plus the fees and shipping cost, so im more then a little angry.

That's terrible. What kind of people would even offer to ship the damn thing if they can't do it correctly? Then make you sign a waiver so you can't do anything about it. UPS, apparently.

I say yeah, if they don't do anything, then take it to Youtube. The only way to make them hurt is through the wallet.

Yeah. I was wondering why you'd ask a shipping company to move your stuff. Movers will usually make sure all your things are secure. Chipping companies don't give a f*ck. That's not their job. They always tell you to put it in a box and let them know if it's fragile. Otherwise, they don't care. You could've done it yourself too.

movers? the quote i got back ranged from 3-4 thousand to ship anything from toronto to edmonton. the entire collection of my worldly possession is worth 2 thousand at best. i had to sign the "waver" which is just a loose sheet of paper not an official form an i wanted to buy insurance for more then just loss but the guy wouldnt let me saying they cant insure a "used" tv. even signing something like that doesnt give any company the right to toss your stuff around without a care and smash your things. i was expecting scratches or perhaps a crack but what i got was a smashed up box that even the drivers where joking about.

why does a company ship if they know that they wouldnt be able to get it there in one piece? i maybe dumb for thinking that a shipping company would be responsible enough to ship goods safely, but they are much at fault for taking my money instead of refusing to ship the stuff. if i knew that absolutely everything would be put through such a mess i would of risked only shipping items of little value and stored the rest with my grandmother.

i had them wrap the tv for 50 bucks because i knew i couldnt do it because i lacked the experience to do so. i trusted they would wrap it in a professional manor, i trusted that they would identify it as a fragile item that needed care, and i trusted that it would make it safely. clearly this isnt the responsibility of a company who deals with businesses.

Of course UPS isn't a shipping company. It's a battery backup!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterrup ... wer_supply

But seriously, the absolute best thing anyone can do is rent a UHAUL and move everything yourself. I would never trust a shipping company... or even professional movers for that matter. The thing with other people besides you moving your stuff is that they could give a rat's ass what happened to it... it isn't theirs. So what you do is get a friend or two and move it all in a rented truck.... and even if you don't have anyone to help, it would still be better to just do it all yourself.

Again... why are you using a shipping company to ship your stuff? Unless it's non-fragile stuff, there's no real good use for it. When me and my family have moved in the past, we either had someone move it for us or we did it ourselves with a UHAUL. There are certain things you ship, and certain things you don't. Like you buy your TV at the store and bring it home with you. You don't order it online for someone to ship it to you. You'll probably get a broken product. It's more common sense than anything.

i previously worked on the laser printer tech support line for HP, they had a company contracts with UPS for shipping new printers from the warehouse to their customers. I recieved a call from a very annoyed lady whose office had ordered a Colour Jet 4700 (one of the stand up ones about 2x2feet ish and prolly comes just above your waist high. When it arrived via the ever courteous UPS there was only one driver, a woman, who dropped it out of the back of the truck then rolled it up the stairs. When they opened it loads of little parts fell out at them. Despite the hilarious visual imagery it was pretty bad, and this is on a company contract for shipping.

Companies like UPS are actually supposed to be able to ship, yes, even valuable or fragile materials, unless we all expect every company that makes anything vaguely fragile or electronic to use movers or have their own entire worldwide shipping department (no, this is not feasible). Shipping companies are specifically For (as far as I've ever understood it) moving valuable items in smaller quantities from A to B that you don't want to trust the regular postal service with. Specifically because they offer better tracking, safety and security and all that. If a company that claims to be able to wrap something and take it somewhere and charges you money for doing so then asks you to sign a damage waiver and delivers it in that condition, clearly someone is doing it wrong. I doubt, though, that it is you. If you ring up and make enough noise at them, they will eventually have to deal with it, but you can't be too canadian about it or they'll ignore you. Make lots of angry annoyed noise, if it's worth the effort.
