So, out of this year, the biggest hyped games I have played so far have been Resident Evil 5, Uncharted 2, and Brutal Legend. Of course Left 4 Dead 2 and Perfect Dark XBLA are on the way, but I digress.
I had just finished playing Uncharted 2 for the second time (and even started a third time around... each on harder difficulties and I'm now on the hardest
)... But before I got into it, I still had Brutal Legend still sitting there in the packaging. And I loved Psychonauts and was a big fan of Tim Schafer's point and click adventures way back when on the PC. So I had HIGH expectations for Brutal Legend. That and Jack Black... woot.
Anyway, I got into the game... and it was just wonderful. The art design, the writing, everything was spot on with what I was expecting from this open world action adventure. And that's what I got. From the first time I entered thew world, I was free to go where I wanted and do what I pleased. All the side missions were fun to do and rewarded you with points you can used to upgrade once you talked to Ozzy Osborne
.
Well, only after a few ours in... the game completely FLIPS on you. It changes genre on you without a single warning. Suddenly the open world action aventure is now all the optional stuff is. The actual game that progresses through the storyline and even what the entire multiplayer section of the game is... is a RTS (real time strategy).
Ermm... what?
Yeah, a freaking RTS.
You get many different types of units. You get melee units, ranged units, healers... and you even get qutie a few more, but you have to upgrade your base (stage) first, that is, after farming resources (fans). And these fights are LOOOOOOOOONG. And it's not all that hard to lose either. There were even fights where some hidden screw-you-over units are that you need to prepare for before hand, which you would otherwise have no clue about on your first try.
So in short: If you do not like RTS style games... do not get this. Myself? I'm not really that big of fan of them. But it wasn't anything I was expecting. So I'm rather let down. The RTS side of the game isn't really even that fun. Had the game been straight Action Adventure, it would have been perfect. The writing, voice action, story, graphics, and music is still top notch though. I'm just really let down by this.
Also, a few other minor complaints. You can't jump. Why the hell can't you jump in an action adventure game?! Also, driving the car is very frustrating. It gets stuck on absolutely EVERYTHING. But yeah, if you like RTSs... then by all means grab it.
