Turns out there's this movie, Jacob's Ladder. It's directed by Adrian Lyne, the Fatal Attraction guy.

This movie gave me nightmares. Upon further research I learned that the creator of Silent Hill was inspired by this movie to make, uh... Silent Hill.

The similarities are uncanny, the coolest/creepiest part takes place in a hospital, that super twitchy head thing, (you see it a lot in the Silent Hill 3), the main character is goin' batshut nuts and it has some of the kick arse-est plot twists ever.

It's awesome. Anyone who likes Silent Hill should definetly check it out.

I saw Silent Hill (the movie) last night. I'm very interested in the universe, but I haven't played the games much at all. Just maybe an hour of the first game.

The movie was pretty good. I think I gave it 8/10.

I saw Jacob's Ladder in the movie theatre.

Tis one of the benefits of being older.

And yes, it is still an awesome movie but at the time was absolutely kickass for the specific psychological horror subculture. I don't remember the mainstream saying thinking anything other than it was a good movie and scary. I don't think they fully appreciated how before it's time it was.

I never seen Jacob's Latter, but I've been dying to. Seeing as the movie was one of the major influences to the Silent Hill series, I would love to see it. I'm a big Silent Hill fan.

Must be the benefit of not playing much of the games. Even though the special effects were grade A, I gave the movie 8 lethal injections out of 10. The movie lacked the soul of the series. Now, if they advertise the movie as a comedy or parady, then it was great. :|

I refuse to see Silent Hill the movie for one simple reason which ironically might make Ixzion change his impression of the movie.

In the video games from which the movies are originally based, Silent Hill 1 and 2 both star adult men. While I more than welcome a teen girl to star in Silent Hill 3, the Silent Hill movie is more the storyline of Silent Hill 1 (as far as I've heard) than any other Silent Hill game.

They made the main character female in the movies so that you would be more sympathetic to the motherly aspect (I suppose also to have a female to look at througout the movie), but the original essence of Silent Hill (the modal realm) is really about the adult male trying to search for a loved female in a world of horrors that he needed to survive spiritually.

The makers of the movie missed the point of the realm or chose to disrespect it.

Jacob's Ladder, is essentially also an adult male oriented survival experience.

Never saw Jacob's Ladder, but being a huge fan of the Silent Hill Series I did watch the movie.

Though it could have been better they did a pretty good job with it,
7/10 for me.

I have played and beat all the games except for Silent Hill 3.
I am also very excited about Silent Hill V for the PS3 and 360!

I hope it's release doesn't get pushed back to much lol.

I don't really think that the movie-guys missed the point of the whole Silent Hill realm. It's true that the whole idea of SH2 is a man searching for comfort from a lost companion, I didn't really percieve the same idea from the first one. I just thought of it as a parent searching for their child in a world clucked up beyond all repair.

But then, there's the issue of nurse whats-her-name. to be completely honest I can't remember (or understand) what happened in any of those cinemas, as I played the game a loooooooonnnnggg time ago.

Damnit. I hate it when you get halfway through your point only to realize you can't actually back it up. I suck.

Anyway, you could say the idea of the movie is the same as that of the game, except instead of a guy searching for a loved one, it's a girl. I don't really think the gender of the character in Silent Hill 1 is relevant.
Harry was sort of a dork anyway.

I'm some sorta masochistic, pyramid head worshiping, nyctophilic(not sure if thats a word or if I'm using it properly) Silent Hill nut, and I and my other Silent Hill nut friends were satisfied with the representation of the realm in the movie for the most part with the exception of the representaion of ol' PH and the acting ability of that red-headed girl.

My point is, I think you're analyzing it too much. It's just a movie.

My personal gripe about the movie is that it seemed like they ran out of ideas on how to end the movie, the final scene dragged and then gave us this ghost realm? ending...

Overall, it wasn't a bad movie as far as keeping it as close to a nightmarish representation as possible. I liked it for certain aspects, I'm almost certain it should have been proofread by a better scriptwriter and delete some of the useless dialogue as an example.

Definitely a decent port to the film otherwise.

@SSD256 (especially) and Zane Deadreich

As you are well aware SH2 is about a man searching for his dead wife who happened to send a message to meet him in Silent Hill.

But SH1 is about a father searching for his lost daughter. Already that implies a lot of meaning.

But when you make it a mother searching for a lost daughter, you are:

1: Disrespecting the role of the man as a compassionate parent.

2: Disrespecting the relationship of the audience to a male hero.

3: Counting on eye candy to sustain interest, thus disrespecting the realm.

The original game and SH2, which I assume is the best of them all do not suffer these port to film problems. I simply wish that porting to films didn't mean a deathwish for so much of what made the originals MEANINGFUL, the same way that Resident Evil the movie was a horrid experience of the game realms. SH, like any other virtual experience is not only about cool looking imagery, it is deeper than that. At least it was in the games.

@ Bo - So very true...

@ Lev - We also can't forget an extremely close runner up of "House of the Dead". It hurts my head just thinking about it.
