Sometimes we get ourselves into a game that we feel the urge to absolutely complete 100% despite it having numerous ridiculous completion conditions or we hit obstacles that make us want to quit but we still come back to in the end in order to overcome them and get that much closer.

For me, the latest is Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call in getting a Perfect Chain, SSS Rank and Total Critical on every song on every difficulty, and with DLC having been released on a regular basis since release it's been on-going.

Before that it was Fire Emblem: Awakening, in making sure to get every possible Support Conversation for every potential pair-up and parent/child combination. Easily reached into hundreds of hours.

Most of the time, if a game has ridiculous requirements for getting 100%, I'm not going to bother. Like the Smash Bros. games, for example. They want you to beat challenges on the super high difficulties, and I'm not good enough to do that. Not to mention collecting all the trophies is just unfeasible.

Some of the Final Fantasies are also a good example. FF9 and 10 being the biggest two. In FF9, to get 100%, you gotta get to the final dungeon and fight Hades in less than 12 hours, all while trying to do everything else. Um, no. In FF10, you gotta do a chocobo race in less than 0 seconds. Um, no.

Off the top of my head, the only game I've gotten 100% on despite not being easy is Mario Kart: Double Dash. I got a perfect score on every cup on every difficulty level. And if you've ever played Double Dash, you'll know how difficult that really is. But it's my favorite Mario Kart, so I got good.

I think the game that did this to me in the biggest way was Two Worlds on X360. I played that game for a few hundred hours just trying to get every achievement. The single achievement that took the longest was the one for visiting every location in the game. Here's a post I made back in 2009 about it.
Quote:
I finally 1000'd Two Worlds. The thing that took so long (a year of sporadic gaming) was the "Visit All Locations" Achievement. There are a lot of locations.

19 camps
7 caves
8 cities
12 geographical points of interest
11 grave yards
24 landmarks
20 villages
98 teleports
227 mana sources
174 health shrines
124 underground caves, mines, tombs, etc
177 towers
100 road signs
609 ruins
388 tents/war tents
3 windmills
101 obelisks
...whew!

I ran around a HUGE world map for 15 hours today just marking them on the map. I finally finished, then I finally finally finally beat the endboss. The most tedious completion I have ever attempted.
I will never play that game again.

Actually felt the same about Lost Odyssey. It as an achievement for opening every single chest and picking up every item in the game. Well, other than a checklist there's no real way to keep track of them all and many, many areas become inaccessible as the game progresses. Was able to get every achievement except that one on my first run of the game, then quickly did a second with a double checklist to get that last one.

Though it really is an underrated gem on the 360 despite said achievement.

I've always been a huge Devil May Cry fan. I've played them to death. When I heard there was going to be a Xbox collection of 1, 2, and 3, and had a boat load of achievements, I be like-

Seriously though, check out these achievements. 99 of them, including beating Dante Must Die mode on each game, getting S rank on all missions in DMC3, Completing Bloody Palace in DMC2 and 3, and a whole lot more.

When I say this was hard... I mean that this was insanely hard. It was crazy fully completing DMC1 and all it's achievements only to be a third of the way done with the game. It was worth it though. That combat is so fun and it felt super rewarding to finally complete it. It's by far my most crowned achievement in gaming.
