Cursed Desires
Overview:
Vonwert has once again published a mystery-themed puzzle game, much in the same brand as Dark Illusions. Titled Cursed Desires, the story of Lex Johnson is told as he takes over the exploits and adventures of a reclusive millionaire. Lex, by a miraculous circumstance, finds himself being the sole beneficiary to an 85 million dollar heritage when attending a funeral out of curiousity. To make matters more surprising, the late millionaire was researching famed female pirate Anne Bonny, and was on the way to discovering the six Cursed treasures detailed in her journal.

Positive +
Presentation
Negative -
Vonwert demonstrates a mastery in designing the levels for Cursed Desires. From the visual effects to the custom sprites by Sir Sniffy himself, Cursed Desires has a visual flair that shows just how far RPGMaker 1 can go. Objects even have shadows in this game!
There are no evident mistakes made in the design of this game. No complaints here.

Positive +
Features
Negative -
The many puzzles are executed almost perfectly. From tests of brain power to classic trial-and-error puzzles, Cursed Desires has them all. Aside from that, some puzzles even show how much life you have left (in the form of hearts) to complete that puzzle. Another great addition is the many multiple choice options in the cutscenes, letting you examine areas and getting commentary from Lex on various things before proceeding.
Some of the puzzles are frustrating, but that is due to trial-and-error difficulty. No problems here, but some people may be turned off by this.

Positive +
Debugging
Negative -
With the abundance of puzzles, there are a lot less mistakes then you'd expect. However, this system is not perfect, and this area suffers a little. For the most part, the puzzles work just fine.
One puzzle has a serious bug where you will have to restart the entire game if you mess up (no reset option for the puzzle), unless there is a saved game you can load prior. The only other errors in Cursed Desires comes from semi-frequent grammatical errors, but nothing that deters the story.

Positive +
Fun
Negative -
An interactive story, excellent visuals, and inventive puzzles make Cursed Desires a joy to play. Period.
The puzzle bug may be a nuisance, but it wasn't a total bore to replay the first level again. Just goes to show how great the presentation was!

Six years after its initial release, the first RPG Maker for the Sony PlayStation still manages to impress many. There are truly no boundaries for fans of old-school 2D games. As long as creators such as Vonwert still produce quality games such as these, RPGMaker 1 will never truly die.
