Overview:
Watch Grass Grow is exactly that. Start the game. Watch grass grow. If it doesn't grow, come back in an hour. If it doesn't grow again, come back in another hour. Rhen2002 certainly had an oddball idea for the first game in "The Pointless Trilogy". Kinda an odd choice for my first review, but I figured nobody else would take it. I can't blame them.

Despite the simple concept, there was a little work given to this game's presentation. It includes a nice title screen. A title screen consisting of grass, but it's still nice, and includes some fancy custom text. And while you're watching grass grow, there's nice, calm music playing in the background.

The grass isn't really interesting to look at. That's all the screen consists of, is grass. And you basically have to stare at the same screen hours at a time, as the grass only really grows all at once after a certain amount of time. While this is understandable considering how few grassy graphics RPGM1 has, it would've been a little more interesting had the grass grown in a little uneven. Although the growing grass is at least arranged in a slightly interesting fashion.

Watch Grass Grow rewards you for your progress, giving you special awards at given points, accessed by means of a simple custom menu. That's about it, although I've found that if you stare at the screen long enough, you start to see patterns in the grass.

The Magic Eye (R) isn't really a feature, and the awards aren't much of one. All the awards do is show that you've wasted a lot of time. They don't really do anything special.

For the most part, the game is bug-free. It is entirely possible to reach the "end" of the game, and the grass does indeed grow.

|
Aside from a couple minor typos, there is one major glitch. You aren't actually given the last award. Instead, you're given a second 3rd Award. If there was something special about getting that 4th Award, I had no way of finding out. It's a single non-fatal glitch, but really not one you want to find after playing the game like this for so long.

Believe it or not, there was something amusing about playing a game called Watch Grass Grow at first. I couldn't stop laughing at the constant barrage of "No growth visible yet"s, at least for the first five or so minutes.

|
Unfortunately, this didn't last. The game very much outlasts any initial "fun" there might be, and it's even worse if you aren't as easily amused like myself. In fact, the game is so overly long, Rhen has told me he didn't expect anybody would actually play all the way to the end.

Watch Grass Grow isn't a complete waste of time. It's worth a quick shot if you have nothing better to do, or want a quick chuckle. But it really isn't worth playing all the way through, especially beyond grabbing the third award. Although, it is a great way to induce relaxation. "Sleeper hit" indeed. Be on the lookout for its supposed sequel, "Bubblewrap: The Game", expected to release after the RPG Maker Pavilion's current contest ends.
